apparently there was a party or something at the panyard - not last saturday but the one before. i don't know who was there or what it was for. i wasn't there. but my pans were, because they don't fit in my house.
i bet you have already guessed how this ends.
i walked in a bit late and started playing on friday without warming up or anything first. something sounded off, terribly off, but i had no idea it was ME until we stopped. i was in a fog of unreality as i played a chromatic scale to judge the full extent of the problem. no! not my pans! i was calm but i was fighting back tears. my poor babies...
my C pan was severely injured. C and Eb are practically the same note now - somewhere in the quarter tones around D. i'm not sure if it was dropped on the rim or squished or what, but it's bad. i am full of sadness. i would be mad, but i knew the risks when i left them there, and i desperately need to get cases. i gambled and i lost. (i win!) besides, i don't know who did it, so although i can imagine punching someone, i don't know whose face to picture meeting my fist. i'm always yelling at the kids who horse around near my pans. "do you KNOW how much these cost? MORE THAN YOUR LIFE IS WORTH," i say to them. too bad it was probably the drunk adults i needed to yell at, not the teenagers.
of course billy the tuner is not in morgantown right now, he's in florida. hey, so am i, but my pans aren't. apparently there are some tuners in new york but i don't know them. kristen might drive them out to morgantown to one of ellie's people. it couldn't have happened at a worse time, really - we have a metric assload of gigs coming up, mostly bluemont concert series stuff, and i have to play on the band cellos until mine get tuned. they're not in great shape. and if another cello player other than adam shows up, we'll have to drag out the REALLY crappy band cellos.
there is more to the story of why friday was declared "karen's worst night at the panyard ever", but it worked out ok and i don't feel like typing it out.
two gigs on saturday. one of them was a boat ride, a booze cruise kind of thing for WHUR, howard university's radio station. it was pretty good, although the crowd waited until about half an hour before we docked to really get into it. the first one was some river festival thing out on the eastern shore. i left the house at 11:15 am saturday morning and didn't get to bed until 4:00 am sunday morning. gah. long weekend.
oh! unrelated to pan, but: we have cucumbers! i was worried because only two plants came up, but those two plants are TAKING OVER THE SIDE YARD and have put out many little baby cucumbers, the first of which are beginning to swell up to adult cucumber size. i for one welcome our new green, nubbly overlords. in other news, our carrots still suck. we already ate/gave away all of the bean harvest. next year we've got to plant those in intervals, so we have a few beans at a time for a long time, instead of OH MY GOD THE BEANS for like, a week.
